Reed, Spieth defeat Stenson, Rose 3 & 2 in Friday foursomes

The American dream team continued its successful partnership, setting the tone for the morning session by shooting 3-under to lead wire-to-wire and defeat a Europe pair that was undefeated in the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles. Reed rolled in a 12-foot birdie on the par-4 16th to seal the victory, which was the United States’ first in the opening match since 1995. Reed and Spieth improved to 3-0-1 overall as a team and secured their first foursomes victory. Rose fell to 4-2-1 in foursomes while Stenson dropped to 2-2-1.

KEY MOMENT: The U.S. seized control early, making birdies on No. 2 and No. 3 to take a 2-up lead. They maintained the lead through the front nine but started to miss fairways and scramble around the turn - where Hazeltine turns into a beast. After losing No. 9 to a par, Spieth left his 60-foot birdie try on No. 10 eight feet short. Reed sank the slippery downhill par putt to halve the hole. The U.S. maintained a two-hole cushion until it ended the match.
